In May 1970, 100 students were published in the “Nigerian Observer” as successful candidates who had gained admission into the Midwest Institute of Technology now known as the University of Benin.
A supplementary admission brought the population of the school to 108. Most of the students could not afford any of the present day luxuries. Only one student had a musical set, which is quite unbelievable compared to the present state of affairs in the campuses today, but little did we know that today, uniben would boast of such great alumnus.
The rise and rise of UNIBEN ALUMNI
The University of Benin Alumni Association came into existence on 26th February 1977 through the effort of a few alumni. A full executive was elected in 1978. Its headquarters was first located at an office offered to the Association at Ekenwan campus by the University Administration but later moved to the Alumni Centre, Ugbowo campus, University of Benin, Benin City built by the Association. A comprehensive compilation has been done by Tony O. Iyoghiojie (Nat. PRO, UBAA 1989 – 1995).
